SITHOLE, MONTJANE MAKE WINNING STARTS IN BRITAIN
South African top world ranked wheelchair tennis aces Lucas Sithole and Kgothatso Montjane have warmed up for next week's UNIQLO Doubles Masters with comprehensive opening victories at the Bath Indoor Tournament in Britain on Wednesday.
The two-time Grand Slam champion Sithole moved into the quads semi-final round with a convincing win over Petter Edstrom in less than an hour.
Sithole started strong against the Swedish world number 61 and didn’t look back destroying the 44-year-old in a clean sweep 6-0 6-0. Sithole who fell on the hands of world number 1 American David Wagner in the semi-final round in Bath last year got better and better as the match went on and Edstrom had no answer.
“Great match today. I feel I am on the right track and just want to improve more on my game, play aggressive, improve my mobility and to be alert to each point,” commented Sithole.
Sithole will face American fourth seed Nicholas Taylor in the last four stage and could meet biggest rival Wagner in the final.
US Open semi-finalist Montjane, ranked number 5 globally, needed less than 2 hours to defeat Germany’s Katherina Kruger 6-1 6-1, to reach the women’s semi-final round.
Montjane has improved her record to 15 wins in 20 matches against the German and will next face the winner of the match between fourth seed Lucy Shuker (GBR) and Manami Tanaka (JPN) in the semi-final round.
Montjane who has been out of competition for over a month due to wrist injury admitted to nerves, “I was a bit nervous after being out of competition for a month and half, but I am glad I pulled a solid performance. I am just looking forward to the next round and play my best”.
