MONTJANE, SITHOLE QUALIFY FOR WHEELCHAIR TENNIS SEASON FINALE IN FLORIDA

South African wheelchair tennis aces Kgothatso Montjane and Lucas Sithole have qualified to take part in the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters in Florida next month – the season finale to the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis World Tour.

The International Tennis Federation’s season-ending championship for the world’s top wheelchair singles players will be hosted for the first time at the USTA National Campus at Lake Nona, Orlando, Florida, from 28 November-2 December.

The two stars are among a star-studded list of 22 players from 13 different nations who will be battling for honours.

The top eight men's and women's singles players and the top six quad singles players on the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Rankings to have entered at the entry cut-off date of 15 October qualify for the 2018 NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters.

Montjane enjoyed a sterling year, clinching her fourth title at the Swiss Open in Geneva, dismantled world number 8 Lucy Shuker from Britain 6-4 6-4 to become the first South African wheelchair tennis player to reach the US Open Grand Slam semi-final last month at Flushing Meadow since Lucas Sithole in 2013.

The world number 5 Montjane has stepped up in the major tournaments by reaching at least semi-finals in two of the four slams this year. She wrote her names in the history books in July this year becoming the first South African black woman to play at Wimbledon where she reached the last four stage.

The country’s top ranked quad player Sithole has been out of sorts early this season due to illness but the former world number 2 is fit and ready for the year-end championships.

The triple amputee from Newcastle in KwaZulu-Natal finished in third place behind world number 3 Brit’s Andy Lapthorne at the 2017 NEC Masters and hopes to go a step further in this year’s event.
