WORLD TEAM CUP - DAY 1: SOUTH AFRICA LOSES 3-0 TO AUSTRALIA
South African quads team faced a tough challenge in their opening pool tie losing 3-0 to top seeds and defending champions Australia on Monday’s first day of the 2018 BNP Paribas World Team Cup in Apeldoorn, Netherlands.
The Pool A contest between South Africa and Australia saw promising wheelchair tennis star Donald Ramphadi take on world number 4 quad ace Heath Davidson in the opening rubber.
Ramphadi gave the Australian a fright in the first ever match between them before Davidson prevailed 6-7(5) 7-6(4) 6-3 to give Australia a 1-0 lead.
Two-time Grand Slam champion Lucas Sithole went head-to-head against his rival Dylan Alcott in the second singles rubber. The Australian world number 3 took charge from the onset and was rather more clinical as he extended his unbeaten sequence over Sithole to 14 matches with a straight sets 6-2 6-2 victory.
In the doubles rubber, Sithole joined forces with Ramphadi to challenge the Australian duo of Alcott and Davidson but the 2017 champions proved much too strong for Sithole and Ramphadi, winning 6-2 6-1 to give Australia the overall victory 3-0.
South Africa will face Israel on Tuesday’s second day of the BNP Paribas World Team Cup.
