MARIPA, CATTANEO CLINCH POLISH OPEN DOUBLES TITLE

South Africa’s leading wheelchair tennis men’s player Evans Maripa and doubles partner Frederic Cattaneo from France defeated Stefanos Diamantis of Greece and Poland’s Tadeusz Kruszelnicki to clinch the Plock Orlen Polish Open men's doubles title in Poland on Saturday.

Maripa and Cattaneo claimed a long and entertaining men’s double final

The first set alone took 80 minutes, with the seventh game proving to be the longest after featuring 11 deuces, a total of 28 points and a succession of marathon rallies. By the end of the set Cattaneo and Maripa and their opponents had played 144 points.

After two hours of play the French-South African top seeds edged to a 7-6(4) 6-4 victory.

The 26-year-old Maripa however lost in the quarter-final round in the singles event to world number 21 Kamil Fabisiak 2-6 6-3 6-7(2) from Poland.

Maripa took an early lead to secure the opening set and after going down in the second set, the Limpopo star rebounded strongly in the deciding set but was overpowered by the Polish former world number 16.

Maripa’s win at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) level 2 event which forms part of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour marks his third doubles title this season.
