PLAIN SAILING FOR SEEDS
The Airports Company South Africa EC Open, running from the 11-14 December, at the Port Elizabeth Lawn Tennis Club, Park Central, Port Elizabeth, continued to produce some world class tennis. This event forms part of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis World Tour and is sponsored by Airports Company South Africa.
In the men's division the two top seeds, Evans Maripa and Leon Els showed clinical precision in their singles semi-finals encounters, dropping only two games each to advance to the finals. Maripa, who has moved into the position of world no 14, and is the first men's player from Africa to participate in the NEC World Doubles Masters, will take on Leon Els, who has claimed 3 singles titles in South Africa during 2014.
The ladies draws lived up to the expected excitement with experienced Rose van der Meer toppling the enthusiastic up and coming junior, and the no 1 seed, Thando Hlatshwayo. The match was characterised by long rallies, and clever play. The second semi final of the day saw second seed Mariska Venter take a comfortable first set from Mabel Mankgele, but having to fight from 5-1 down to take the second and final set. Venter won the match 6-2 7-5.
The finals are set to start at 09h00 tomorrow at the Port Elizabeth Lawn Tennis Club, PE and promise to produce great tennis. We would encourage you to watch some phenomenal athletes who are guaranteed to inspire you. Entrance is free.
