Rose van der Meer and Leon Els hope to continue their winning streak on the local international circuit with a good showing at the upcoming Airports Company South Africa Strand Open Futures event to be held at the Strand Tennis Club, Cape Town from 6th-9th October 2014.
Leon Els and Rose van der Meer photo by Reg CaldecottAfter emphatic winter victories at the Airports Company South Africa SOWETO and Pretoria Opens, Els will seek to consolidate his 100% winning record in the men's sections, but it will not be an easy task as second and third seed respectively, Patrick Selepe and Marshall Marsh lie in wait for any slip ups from the top seed. In fact, Marsh poses a bigger threat since he defeated Els in the semifinals of the Airports Company Strand Open 2013. The other men to watch are Mzwanele Thintsi, Ishmael Tshipuke, Mayenzeke Gwija, Frank Ramokoatsi and new kid on the block, Vuyisani Mantshula who will look to spring a few surprises against the top players.

Van der Meer on the other hand knows that a win is essential if she wants to keep her no. 2 spot on the SA rankings. The gap between second, third and fourth placed players is so narrow that anyone emerging victorious between Rose van der Meer, Mariska Venter, and Thando Hlatswayo could easily be the second ranked lady in the country. In the absence of fourth ranked Mabel Mankgele, Tsholofelo Sibanda and company will relish an opportunity to stake their claim for a position in the semifinals, thus providing an opportunity to move up the ladder.
Venter on the other hand has a point to prove against Hlatswayo who ousted her en route to her maiden title victory at the Airports Company South Africa Pretoria Open in July. Dudu Mogokonyane, Zimasa Willie and Monica Ngwenya are in good form and likely to pose a threat, whilst Nonkanyiso Nyosi is a darkhorse in the event and might just crack into the big time this time around.
Bongani Dlamini headlines the quads division and will be on the lookout for Danny Mohlamonyane who came within a point of ousting the former at the Airports Company Pretoria Open recently. Queen Nhlapo's name also goes into the pot along with Fernando Gallant's as the top four look to fight it out for this year's title. Dlamini has however fired the first salvo by beating a top 10 player recently and therefore will not be deterred in maintaining his superior record locally.
