SA Ace Lucas Sithole honoured at Discovery Sport Industry Awards 2014
Lucas Sithole was honoured at the recent Discovery Sports Awards for his outstanding achievement and memorable performance at the US Open Grand Slam, where he beat world no 1, David Wagner (USA), to become the first player from Africa to win a US Open Grand Slam singles title.
The prestigious Discovery Sport Industry Awards were held on 13 February 2014 to celebrate the achievements and meritorious work by South Africa's select sportsmen and women. One thousand two hundred guests with sportsmen and celebrities such as Lucas Radebe, John Smit, Barry Richards, Cameron van der Burgh, Roxy Louw, Jacques Kallis, Jomo Sono, Mark Fish, Natalie du Toit and several more joined in celebrating and recognizing the best the Sport business has to offer.
Triple amputee Lucas Sithole is currently ranked no.2 in the world in the wheelchair tennis quads division, and has had a phenomenal 10 months. Lucas won his 1st Super Series title at the British Open in July 2013, became the 1st African to win a US Open Grand Slam title in September 2013, and was the runner up at the NEC World Quads Singles Masters in November 2013. Sithole started 2014 in good form, winning his 2nd Super Series singles title as well as the doubles title at the Apia Sydney International Open and the singles and doubles titles at The Melbourne Open. To add to his achievements Lucas was runner up in both the singles and doubles at the Australian Open Grand Slam.
